Horticulture Therapy classes

A child asks his mother "Mom, will these plants live in this flower box?" She answers "sure, honey, plants are strong and tough, like us." The American Horticultural Therapy Association (AHTA) describes horticultural therapy as a method that uses plants, gardening activities, and the natural world in professional therapy and rehabilitation programs. Horticultural therapists act as advocates for access for people of all ages and abilities. They are adept at connecting communities with gardens and developing outreach programs, and at providing professional training and on-site therapeutic programs. The horticultural therapy programs at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens are designed to further a deep connection to nature with a landscape that will stimulate and strengthen mental, motional, and physical balance. The gardens support participants with activities both active and passive in nature. The summer 2007 programs at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens served many diverse groups, including the Mountain Hospice volunteers, families facing medical adversity, and the Buddies (child/adult mentor) program. Spending time in the garden provides stress relief, one of the many benefits of horticultural therapy. The harvest program with the Buddies also provided participants with educational knowledge in nutrition, with the kids harvesting, washing, and preparing salads from the garden that they had planted earlier in the spring.

The Vail Nature Center joins Vail Youth Services for a unique 2-day per week camp that encourages the participants to explore ecology and examine their own relationship to local flora and fauna. The campers spend half of each day at the Nature Center where naturalists from the Gore Range Natural Science School lead a variety of activities. Gore Creek, nearby trails and wildflower meadows serve as an exciting natural lab for experiments, games, and lively exploration. Children spend the other half of the day at the Youth Center enjoying nature-oriented arts and crafts and energetic activities to complement each day's theme. Campers must bring a sack lunch, beverage and adequate clothing and sun protection for this active camp. Interesting Insects As the largest group of animals in the world, insects play an important role in our ecosystem. Search for insects and explore how they are adapted to the life they lead. Even in this tiny world, there are predators & prey, farmers & gatherers�and, well, some are just bugs. The Butterfly Pavilion will bring interesting and exotic insects that are sure to have you asking, "What is that?" Keepers of the Earth Walk through the history of the Rocky Mountains by examining the wilderness ethic of Native Americans, miners, trappers, and settlers who lived in the Vail area. Children will learn the importance of sustainable living, reduce, reuse and recycle. We will have Ute and Oglala Sioux Native Americans make a guest appearance to teach the children about their history, animal sign language and share some personal stories about growing up as Native Americans. Wet & Wild Jump in and explore the mountain streams of Colorado and learn about the importance of conserving and protecting our water resources. Be prepared to get your feet wet as you explore the shallow streambeds and the riparian habitat of Gore Creek searching for aquatic plants, amphibians and insects. The Leadville Fish Hatchery will join us for a wet and wild presentation that will teach children the importance of aquatic life and how to preserve our local rivers. Feathered Friends The Nature Center has a wonderful location for viewing our local bird life: Hummingbirds, Hawks and everything in between. The Raptor Education Foundation will allow children to get a closer look at the beauty and power of Eagles, Owls, Hawks and Falcons � all Birds of Prey flying throughout Colorado and North America. Rocky Mountain Mammals Learn more about our own Rocky Mountain mammals. We will study bighorn sheep, mountain lions, bears, beavers, deer & elk. Learn these animals' relationships to each other and the ecological systems they inhabit. The USFS will teach us what it takes for these animals to survive the Rocky Mountain habitat and help us understand how to take care of our local wildlife. Survival Skills Learn the importance of low-impact camping, leaving no trace and other simple skills. You may even learn a few edible and medicinal plants found in the local forests! Mountain rescue will visit to teach global positioning system and map & compass skills. They will discuss the correct gear needed for safe travel in the backcountry and there will be a special guest appearance from a local mountain rescue dog. Food Factory Green things come in every size and shape � take a close look at the variety in the Vail Valley. Discover how plants produce the food and oxygen everything else on earth consumes! Release of Children Children must be signed in and out of camp. Campers are released only to the persons noted on the registration form and ID will be requested. If someone else is picking up your child, please notify camp in writing. Late Fee Camp Vail charges a late fees of $1.00 per minute beginning at 5:31. All late fees will be paid immediately to the counselor who has remained with the child. What to bring to Camp Please send the following items with your camper to keep them happy and prepared for the day: lunch, beverage, sunscreen, hat, jacket, comfortable shoes, rain gear, water bottle and a backpack to carry everything. Please label all belongings accordingly. On Mountain Day, please take extra care to dress campers appropriately from head to toe. Extra money is never needed at Camp Vail, so please DO NOT send money with your child. Discipline Initial disciplinary issues are handled by removing the child from the activity, giving an opportunity to think and reflect, and providing a logical consequence if necessary. If a problem continues, the parent is notified by phone. If the problem persists, a conference is set up with the parent to discuss the standard of behavior required for camp participation. Camp Vail reserves the right to suspend or expel a child if the discipline problem warrants it or if a child is a danger to himself/herself, other children or staff. Medication If your child has medication needs while attending Camp Vail, please call us for procedures recommended by the State of Colorado at (970) 479-2290. Please do not send any medication for your child to carry in his/her backpack during the camp day. Accessibility Camp Vail follows the guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. We do, however, appreciate advance notification if special arrangements are necessary. Please call Camp Vail at least two weeks prior to your child's first day to discuss appropriate accommodations. License Camp Vail is licensed by the Colorado Department of Social Services. Child Protection Camp Vail is required by section 19-10-101, et seq. of Colorado Revised Statutes to report any suspected or observed child abuse or neglect to the proper authorities. A copy of the above statute is available upon request. Snack Camp Vail provides a small snack and drink for each camper every afternoon. Ratio 12 Campers: 1 Counselor PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS Camper's Choice When your camper arrives each day, they can choose from the choices of activities. Activities can include, but are not limited to: archery, climbing wall, scavenger hunt, soccer, hiking or lacrosse. Mountain Day Led by the Mountain Coordinator, campers can enjoy an all day mountain experience with their group. Adventure Program On selected days, campers may choose to opt out of Camp Vail's daily activities to have an all day exploration of Vail Valley activities. John A. Dobson Arena provides a wide array of recreational activities for the Vail community. The arena, a 35,000 square foot multi-purpose facility, is the largest of its type on the Western Slope of Colorado. Dobson Arena is the site for the Vail Figure Skating Festival and the Vail Invitational Skating Championships. Dobson Arena has also become a favorite stop on the training schedule for NHL teams like the St. Louis Blues, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, San Jose Sharks, New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. Locally, Dobson Arena is home to the Vail Junior Hockey Club and Skating Club of Vail. For the recreational skater, Dobson Arena hosts open skating sessions and lessons for all ages and abilities. Dobson arena also offers a wide array of hockey options for both the beginning youngster to the seasoned adult player. Dobson Arena underwent a major expansion and face-lift in the summer of 2001. The Arena now features one new large locker room and a full remodel of the existing locker room spaces, the addition of a 600 square foot multi-purpose room and a new loading and unloading area. The remodel also included replacing Dobson's aging ice systems with a state of the art plant, as well as new dasher boards and glass. Discipline Initial disciplinary issues are handled by removing the child from the activity, giving an opportunity to think and reflect, and providing a logical consequence if necessary. If a problem continues, the parent is notified by phone. If the problem persists, a conference is set up with the parent to discuss the standard of behavior required for camp participation. Pre Kamp Vail reserves the right to suspend or expel a child if the discipline problem warrants it or if a child is a danger to himself/herself, other children or staff. Medication If your child has medication needs while attending Pre Kamp Vail, please call us for procedures required by the State of Colorado at (970) 479-2290. Accessibility Pre Kamp Vail follows the guidelines set by the Americans with Disabilities Act. We do, however, appreciate advance notification if special arrangements are necessary. License Pre Kamp Vail is licensed by the Colorado Department of Social Services.
